Eclectic, inventive, anti-conformist... these are just a few of the widespread characterizations of artists who have lived and worked in the richest, most diverse, and most populous region in the United States since the end of World War II. California Calling is a two-part exhibition highlighting works from a selection of artists and movements in California from the past sixty years. Drawn from the Museum's permanent collection and selected local collections, works included exemplify the distinctive vitality of art in the region and the significance of the SBMA as a venue for art on the West Coast.
Children in kindergarten to sixth grade are invited to the Contemporary Art Forum (CAF) with an accompanying adult free of admission when they present a Passport to Santa Barbara County booklet. Collect a stamp in your passport booklet and experience the art of our time through a variety of art activities, as part of the Santa Barbara Educators Roundtable (SBERT) Passport to Santa Barbara County program. Children who collect eight stamps will receive a free T-shirt. Passport booklets with a list of participating institutions are available through Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Goleta, and Santa Ynez Valley elementary schools, at participating institutions, and from the Santa Barbara Public Libraries.
Assembled over a period of more than 140 years, the collection of the Walters Art Museum entails one of the finest holdings of 19th-century paintings in the United States. The only West Coast venue for the exhibition, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art is pleased to present 40 works from this renowned collection, selected for their art-historical significance and superior quality. Although strongly weighted in favor of French painting, this exhibition, like the collection, also includes major works by British, Spanish, and American artists.
Included are such masterpieces as Eugène Delacroix's powerful Christ on the Sea of Galilee (1854), Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' perfected, late version of Oedipus and the Sphinx (1864), Edgar Degas' splendid Before the Race (1882-1884), and such favorites as Edouard Manet's At the Café (ca. 1879) and Claude Monet's Springtime (ca. 1872). The paintings by Monet form the core of a strong group of Impressionist works, including beautiful landscapes by Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley.
Each painting is deeply satisfying on its own and displayed together, make for a ravishing exhibition that well captures the historical breadth and depth of the Walters' collection.

The community is cordially invited to commemorate the inspirational life and music of Johann Sebastian Bach at the birthday concert celebration.
The concert features music for flute, organ, and piano by the Bach Family. The centerpiece of the program highlights the Little Preludes and Fugues. Concert artists are Jane Hahn, flute, Patrick Lindley, Carol M. Schaeffer, Mahlon E. Balderston, and David A. Gell, members of the Santa Barbara Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. The concert offers moving renditions of the rich heritage of soaring sounds spanning centuries of musical development.
Today, Bach's music is heard around the world. Albert Schweitzer explains in his biography of the composer, that Bach's work was the culmination of an era: "All the artistic endeavors, desires, creations, aspirations, and errors of his own and of previous generations are concentrated and worked out to their conclusion in him." Robert Schumann advised musicians to treat Bach's works as their daily bread. Beethoven copied it by hand in an attempt to work loose its secrets. Goethe, hearing Bach's music for the first time, said, "It is as if the eternal harmony were conversing within itself, as it may have done in the bosom of God just before the creation of the world."
Now J. S. Bach is considered one of the greatest composers of all time. His twenty-one children called him "Old Fogey" and his contemporaries often found him old-fashioned and boring.
The American Guild of Organists, Santa Barbara Chapter, co-sponsors this year's event. The Guild is the international professional association of musicians, serving the organ and choral fields. The organization was founded in 1896 and counts 24,000 members throughout the United States, Canada, and the world. The Santa Barbara chapter was chartered in 1946. David A. Gell serves as Dean of the Chapter. Members of the Guild offer opportunities for the community hear music performed on some of the unique and historic instruments located in the Santa Barbara area.

In the early 1960s the popularity of Abstract Expressionism waned in favor of new modes of abstraction that delivered through a succession of museum and gallery exhibitions and articles in the mainstream press that continued through the decade. Post-painterly Abstraction, Color Field, Op Art, Hard-Edge, Lyrical Abstraction-these are names of some but not all of the fractures that abstraction experienced from the 1960s through the 1970s. There are clear as well as arguable differences among these genres, but central to them all is one factor-an emphasis on color.
Colorscope features a selection of paintings, mostly from the Museum's permanent collection, that reveal innovative ways in which color was made essential during this pivotal time. The exhibition features a range of artists-from influential figures to under-recognized talents-manipulating hues that ebb, flow, blend, undo, and inspire. Artists include Richard Anuszkiewicz, Alice Baber, Jerrold Burchman, Roy Colmer, Dan Christensen, Thomas Downing, John Ferren, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, Larry Poons, Ernest Posey, Bridget Riley, and many others.

About Cottage Health System
The not-for-profit Cottage Health System is the parent organization of Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital (and its associated Cottage Children's Hospital and Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital), Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital, and Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital. Cottage Health System is guided by a volunteer board of directors from the greater-Santa Barbara community. Last year, the Cottage hospitals provided inpatient care for 21,000 people, treated 65,000 patients through their 24-hour emergency departments and helped deliver 2,800 newborns.
Works Progress Administration takes its name from FDR's 1939 New Deal initiative, which put millions to work making buildings, bridges, theater, art and music. The original WPA was rooted in the values of community and creativity, and helped to keep the fire of human dignity burning through the darkest years of the Great Imposters. WPA was born out of the musical community surrounding the legendary LA club, Largo. The members of the band had known and admired each other for years, and found themselves with a strong batch of unrecorded songs, a little downtime, and a collective feeling that it might be a good idea to put something on tape. In this time when the collective spirit is once again in need, WPA looks forward to serving you in your community.
A.J. Roach was raised in the deep hollows of mountainous Scott County, Virginia, home of such legendary acts as The Carter Family and the Stanley Brothers. Growing up, A.J. was fed a steady diet of bluegrass and traditional mountain music that strongly flavors his own vivid and haunting, yet contemporary tunes. In May of 2004, he was the winner in the general category of the coveted Chris Austin Songwriting award at MerleFest, placing him in the company of such seasoned veteran artists as Gillian Welch and up-and-comers like Tift Merritt and Adrienne Young. Other artists that A.J. has shared concert bills with over the last few years include: Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, John Prine, Steve Earle, James McMurtry and The Be Good Tanyas.
