Chaotic Harmony: Contemporary Korean Photography
July 3 - September 19, 2010
The first major exhibition in the United States of photographs made by contemporary Korean artists presently living in Korea, Chaotic Harmony: Contemporary Korean Photography opens a window into the rapidly expanding field of photographic practice in the Republic of Korea, known in the West as South Korea. Bringing together work by 40 contemporary photographers, this exhibition surveys the range of contemporary issues through the themes of family, urbanization, globalization, identity, and nature.
Co-organized by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), this groundbreaking exhibition is not a presentation on "Koreanness," although issues of cultural and personal identity are strong components. Rather, it is an attempt to identify Korea as a source of complex and stimulating visual ideas expressed through the medium of photography. Chaotic Harmony offers an enticing glimpse into the new century as it is perceived by two different generations of Korean artists - those who began exhibiting their work in the 1980s and 1990s, and those who are now exhibiting images from their first or second series of photographs
Meet with new parents like yourselves to share stories, learn new things, and make new friends with families with same age children. New groups begin every other month, offering an opportunity to meet parents with babies the same age as yours. It's a time to share experiences and derive support from one another. The groups are open and can be attended at any time. You do not need to wait for the next group to start.
For parents of newborns 0-5 months: This New Parent Discussion Group meets every Wed., from 10-12 in the Nursery Building at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. (Please note that PEP rents space from the church and is not affiliated with it.) After the initial 10 weeks, parents continue to meet weekly, usually at a park or at each other's homes.
If your child is older than 5 months, please call our warmline or visit our website to get matched up with your child's age group. Some groups meet for years!

Few Japanese artists have attained the level of notoriety achieved by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) in Japan and the West alike. Though best known for his masterful ukiyo-e prints, Hokusai worked in a variety of media, including paintings and drawings, and depicted a wide array subjects during his long and prolific career. This small exhibition, drawn exclusively from the Museum's permanent collection of woodblock prints, features a selection of dynamic compositions from such celebrated series as Thirty-six Views and Mt. Fuji, Journey to the Waterfalls of All Provinces, and One-hundred Poems by One-hundred Poets as well as book illustrations.
Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than an ocean wave! Able to disappear before your eyes! Look! In the tank! Is it an eel?! Is it a fish?! It's...Superpowers!
Yes, sea creatures with super, extraordinary adaptations, far beyond those of mortal humans! Yet despite their incredible powers and abilities, these amazing marine animals rely on the real super heroes - humans disguised as everyday people - to protect them from the most dangerous villains. Humans have the power to change the course of ghastly harmful habits, and to fight the never-ending battle for good ocean health, noble stewardship, and the sustainable way on land and sea! Will you be the next super hero?
This exhibit is sponsored in part by the California Coastal Commission.
Exhibition entrance included with Sea Center admission. Get a membership to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and enjoy free admission to both the Museum and Sea Center, and free tickets to daytime Planetarium shows at the Museum.
Paintings by one of America's most important Impressionist artists will be featured in a major exhibition at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum beginning Thursday, June 24.
Colin Campbell Cooper (1856-1937), who is widely recognized as the foremost painter of early twentieth-century architecture, came to Santa Barbara in 1921 to join the faculty of the Santa Barbara School of the Arts. While living here he executed many alluring paintings of the gardens and buildings that characterized the community during the 1920s and 1930s.
The exhibition, Lasting Impressions: Colin Campbell Cooper, features more than thirty works depicting scenes of Europe, India and the East Coast as well as many California sites from San Francisco to San Diego. Of local interest are paintings of the Samarkand and El Encanto Hotels, Santa Barbara Mission, and local private gardens.

Ten species are represented from the entire 200 million year reign of the dinosaurs. The show includes the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the terror of the ancient terrain, as well as the Plateosaurus and Liliensternus from the Triassic period, the Stegosaurus and Allosaurus from the Jurassic period and Torosaurus and Utahraptor from the awesome Cretaceous. The largest of them, the Brachiosaurus is 36 feet tall, and 56 feet from nose to tail. It took a team of 50 - including engineers, fabricators, skin makers, artists and painters, and animatronic experts - a year to build the original production.
The show depicts the dinosaurs' evolution, complete with the climatic and tectonic changes that took place, which led to the demise of many species. With almost cinematic realism, WALKING WITH DINOSAURS has scenes of the interactions between dinosaurs, and the audience sees how carnivorous dinosaurs evolved to walk on two legs, and how the herbivores fended off their more agile predators.
The history of the world is played out with the splitting of the earth's continents, and the transition from the arid desert of the Triassic period is given over to the lush green prairies and forces of the later Jurassic. Oceans form, volcanoes erupt, a forest catches fire -- all leading to the impact of the massive comet, which struck the earth, and forced the extinction of the dinosaurs.
For more information, please visit www.dinosaurlive.com. Video of the show is available on our site under "Meet The Dinos" tab in the middle of the front page.

About the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation & SMA:
Our daughter, Gwendolyn, has Spinal Muscular Atrophy or SMA Type 1. SMA is the leading genetic killer of infants and young children. It is a terminal, degenerative disease that results in the loss of nerves in the spinal cord and the weakness of the muscles connected with those nerves. SMA impacts the ability to walk, stand, sit, eat, breathe and even swallow. The mind and spirit are no different from that of a healthy baby, but the body eventually fails. Typical babies with SMA Type 1 have a life expectancy of between one and two years and they require around-the-clock medical assistance and monitoring.
Mia Hultgen has SMA Type III. Mia just turned 30. She's beautiful, accomplished, kind, and from all accounts a totally awesome person. Doctor's told Mia and her parents that she would be lucky to survive to 18. And yet here she is...living, loving, and preparing to travel to India! She is incredible! Help us celebrate her birthday and all the funds go to the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation to end SMA!
We're hosting bilingual conversation / story time circles in French and Spanish in the Peanut Gallery this summer led by parents interested in expanding their child's language skills! At each circle, the group can designate someone to lead the group activity for the next meeting. There are many ways the group can explore language development for the kids, including focusing on a topic (colors, animals, etc.), art projects, puppets, games... the sky is the limit and creativity is encouraged. If you're curious, come by to check these out! There's no long term commitment and it's a great way to meet new people in town.

About the play -
Songs for a New World first hit the stage in an off-Broadway production at the WPA Theatre in NYC in 1995. Pushing the boundary between musical and song cycle, this piece is connected more by theme than narrative. Traditionally a song cycle is a group of songs that are by the same composer or the same lyricist and are designed to be performed as a whole. They often rely on narrative or the creation of a persona that is common to the songs. Song cycles began with Ludwig von Beethoven in 1816, but are certainly a feature of contemporary composition in both the symphonic and pop realms. Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon is a classic example.

Tony de los Reyes deftly merges iconic subject matter and historic aesthetic styles in his paintings, drawings and sculpture. For the past five years, his attention has been fixated on what is referred to as the Great American Novel-Herman Melville's Moby-Dick (1851). The style of these works, which are the focus of this exhibition, references Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, movements associated with rugged individualism and "pure" materiality. The depiction of various nautical imagery with various materials, including dark inks and bronze, alludes to the complex multiple perspectives in the narrative. Yet the most powerful effect of this work is its examination of Melville's epic as a mythic vision of America. The artist's distinctive comparisons of Ahab and the U.S. enhances the insatiable and potentially self-destructive nature of both

Eliza Gilkyson, daughter of legendary songwriter Terry Gilkyson, grew up in Los Angeles knowing that her life would revolve around music. As a teenager, she recorded demos for her father. In 2008, she released her latest album, Beautiful World. Song about the exuberant nature of love and life artfully combine with meditative tunes about the world's rich mysteries to create an evocative blend of Eliza's most poetic and accessible music to date. Beautiful World has an optimistic tone that is present even in the most political songs. "This is my most joyful recording yet," says Eliza. "Maybe it is because dark times can illuminate all that is good and decent and worth living for."
Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine of Dala have come a long way in a short time. The two best friends, who met in their high school music class and wrote their first song together in 2002, have since performed at Toronto's legendary Massey Hall a total of six times. Drawing upon influences like The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Dala write songs that are both catchy and insightful. Amanda's ethereal soprano voice blends seamlessly with Sheila's velvety alto, creating the lush harmonies that have become their trademark. Darlings of the Canadian music scene, Dala are now poised to bring their fresh brand of acoustic pop music to the world.

This exhibition features works by artists whose inspiration rises from both fiction and fact, and the surprising results of the conflation of the two. References to literature, history, allegory, and fantasy converge in these works, posing new fictions and realities, and challenging the fine line between the two. Archetypal American subjects dominate these works, which range in reference from colonial history, to religious iconography, to 1970s literature and comics, and to contemporary film and pop music. All appears to be fair game for these artists in their inventive, wry, poignant and thought provoking works. Artists include Eric Beltz, Dawn Clements, Erin Cosgrove, Noah Davis, Kerry James Marshall, Aaron Morse, Allison Schulnik, Jeni Spota, Devin Troy Strother, Frohawk Two Feathers, and Nicolau Vergueiro.

Originating from the Hunan Provincial Museum and organized by the China Institute in New York, this exhibition, traveling to the United Stated for the first time, highlights one of the most important archaeological excavations in China - the unearthing of Mawangdui, the tomb of the first lady and family of the Changsha Kingdom (died 168 BCE) in the Western Han dynasty (206 BCE-8 CE). The Santa Barbara Museum of Art will be the second and only west coast venue. This exhibition will include some of the finest and among the earliest extant lacquers, silks, paintings, calligraphy, and books. Through these various art works, the exhibition will also examine and reconstruct the art and culture of the Western Han dynasty, a formative period of Chinese culture and civilization, focusing on daily cuisine and drink, cosmetics and fashion, music and entertainment, healthcare and exercise, and the fascinating beliefs of the immortal world. The accompanying exhibition catalogue will be bilingual and published by the Hunan Provincial Museum.

To celebrate his 70th birthday in March 2008, he released his first live quartet recording in over 25 years, Rabo de Nube. His New Quartet with Jason Moran on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums, brought European audiences to their feet during their first outing together in 2007. In 2009, they returned to Europe for a series of sold-out concerts from Vienna to Istanbul.

The Flamenco Arts Festival celebrates its 11th season with pianist David Peña Dorantes in the U.S. premiere of Open Piano with Toledo and Grilo.
David Peña Dorantes was born into a family of flamenco royalty in Lebrija, a suburb of Sevilla, Spain. With such family bloodlines coursing through his veins, Dorantes' childhood aspiration was to be a flamenco guitarist, but he soon became fascinated with the piano and studied at the Real Conservatorio de Musíca in Sevilla. Today he is highly regarded as one of the most creative and innovative flamenco piano virtuosos of our time. Drawing on a wide blend of musical styles for his compositions, he gracefully combines classical, jazz, Celtic, Cuban and Brazilian rhythms into his compositions-a rare avant-garde style that has earned him countless international awards and accolades. He has appeared on hundreds of stages throughout the world performing with many top tier flamenco and jazz artists. Dorantes has released two acclaimed albums: Orobroy in 1998 and Sur in 2001.
Joining Dorantes for the 2010 Festival are guest artists Rosario Toledo and Joaquín Grilo, two of Spain's most respected and talented dancers; Gabriel de la Tomasa (singer); Tete Peña (percussion); and Yelsy Heredia (bass). Immediately after the performance, join us at the Lobero courtyard to meet the artists and to celebrate another year of great flamenco in Santa Barbara

The 28th Annual Depot Day celebrates the preservation of one of the area's leading historical landmarks - the Southern Pacific railroad stationhouse built in 1901 by the Southern Pacific Railroad, during the completion of the Coast Line route connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles. Goleta Depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
A highlight of Depot Day 2010 will be four different rides, involving three types of rail vehicles. On the Goleta Short Line miniature-train, there will be two trains offering rides on two different routes - a six-minute ride originating from the Main Station and a three-minute ride based out of the new Westside Station. Train passengers will ride cars that are pulled by miniature engines fashioned after real Southern Pacific Railroad locomotives. Depot Day visitors will also have the opportunity to propel themselves along on the museum's people-powered Handcar, or ride on an old inspection car or "speeder," formerly used on the Ventura Railway. Event-goers can ride as much as they like throughout the day for one $3 fee. There is a 48-inch minimum-height requirement for the handcar; 34-inch minimum for the other rides.
A day-long silent auction will feature about 200 valuable items, including dinners and brunches at fine restaurants, stays at hotels from San Diego to Paso Robles, tickets to regional performing-arts productions, sporting events, and Disneyland, wine tours and a wide assortment of regional wines, Amtrak travel, goods, services, collectibles, and gifts for all ages. An auction list is updated regularly at: http://goletadepot.org/DDAY.htm
Food and refreshments include hot sandwiches, soft drinks, and other beverages.
Depot Day also affords visitors the rare opportunity to view Goleta Depot's upstairs living quarters, where the station agents and their families once lived.
Take the controls of a G.E. Dash 9 diesel locomotive for a realistic ride aboard the Depot Day computer-based locomotive simulator system, featuring PI Engineering's RailDriver cab controller.
In the museum's Gandy Dancer Theater, there will be continuous showings of train-theme films, including rail-travel documentaries and, for children, videos featuring the lovable character, Thomas The Tank Engine.
Depot Day visitors will be able to enjoy the museum's regular attractions, including the Southern Pacific bay-window caboose and the model-railroad exhibit, which depicts the Santa Barbara/Goleta areas of the early 20th century.
A donation of $1 per person will be requested upon admission.
