Kids Summer Reading Program

The Public Libraries have a great Summer reading program. It is from June-August!!! Kids of all ages can join in on the fun. Here is what you do:

• Go to the library & sign your name on a critter of your choice.
• Check out a book with your library card.  Read & enjoy your book.
• Return the book & pick up your Reading Record.
  Write the first title your read (You can record up to 5 titles per visit.)
  Tell one of the volunteers about one of the books you read.
  Page count: 180=2 books, 270=3 books, 360=4 books, 450=5 books
• Keep reading & earn PRIZES at 5, 15, & 25 books read!

KidzArt summer camps take a walk on the wild side. Expect our summer Safari, Caribbean, Mythical and World adventures to be a roaring good time! Using artist quality media, campers draw and paint animals, whimsical creatures, portraits, landscapes, nature, and still life; sculpt clay into keepsake treasures; and create elaborate multi-media projects. With all new curriculum, campers explore and express their creativity, learn techniques, and gain drawing confidence.
No experience needed! Outdoor activity and games included. Campers bring lunch & snack.

Endangered Species: Flora and Fauna in Peril
Wildling Art Museum

The Wildling Art Museum is pleased to announce its summer 2008 exhibition, Endangered Species: Flora and Fauna in Peril. This exhibition represents the Museum's first international juried art competition, with 50 artworks selected from nearly 200 entries.

The artworks use a variety of media (drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and sculpture) to depict flora and fauna listed as threatened or endangered in North America by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Over 47 species are represented, among them the California condor, northern spotted owl, grizzly bear, black-footed ferret, Oahu tree snail, Sonora tiger salamander, Mesa Verde cactus, and Texas wild-rice.

For children, the Wildling offers a folded activity sheet called "The Fox Hunt" with each of the four exhibitions displayed during the year. Each "Fox Hunt" is designed to engage children in the current exhibition and stimulate conversations about the pieces on display with parents, grandparents, siblings, and/or the docent.

The Wildling Art Museum is an educational institution dedicated to presenting the art of America's wilderness and preserving our natural heritage. The museum is located in the town of Los Olivos in California's beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, 30 miles from the city of Santa Barbara

Marine predators and prey alike cloak themselves in camouflage to hide in plain sight. Learn the secrets of blending, patterns, disguises, and mimicry. Sharpen your observation skills and see if you can find the clever critters that deceive to survive. They're hiding right in front of you.

 

Admission to the exhibit included with general admission.

GIANTS: African Dinosaurs
SB Museum of Natural History
Date: Every day (May 3-Nov 2) from 10:00am to 5:00pm
Admission Fees: Members free; non-members $8/adult, $7/senior, $7/teen, $5/child.

Step back in time - 135 million years ago - when dinosaurs roamed the Sahara Desert in Africa. GIANTS: African Dinosaurs showcases the African finds of world-renowned paleontologist Dr. Paul Sereno. Through this interactive dinosaur experience, visitors will learn about fossil discovery, be amazed by the art and beauty of ancient bones, and even search and dig for hidden fossils.  Created by Project Exploration.

Admission to this exhibit in Luria Hall included with general Museum admission.

Summer College Preparation Series

This summer California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP) will be hosting a series of workshops for incoming seniors to help prepare students for the college admissions and financial aid season. Call for more information.

 

The workshop series is open to all students, with individual assistance available for Cal-SOAP eligible seniors (to be determined through the Cal-SOAP application process). The series will consist of five workshops held at Santa Barbara Junior High School in the early evenings during the months of July and August.

Summer ArtVenture Camps
SB Museum of Art
Date: Every weekday (Jun 16-Aug 22)

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art has much to offer children this summer. 

 

ArtVenture Camps for ages 6-12 are unique week-long art experiences where campers learn a variety of art techniques, cultural history, and creative problem-solving in an inspiring atmosphere. Camps run weekly from 9am-3pm.  $250 ($215 SBMA members)

 

Ceramics Camps are week-long half-day camps designed to introduce sculptural and functional ceramics and include hand-building, wheel throwing, finishing and glazing techniques. Class size is limited to 10. Camps run weekly from 12-3pm.  Each week is a different age group; check the website for details.  $220 ($185 SBMA members)

 

After-camp care from 3-5:30pm is available for either camp Monday-THURSDAY.  $60 per week.

 

Parent/Child Classes:  5 Wednesday morning classes for 3-5 year olds with a parent.  Creative Clay Play: Parents and children learn together as they explore imaginative clay play, which encourages manual dexterity and creative thinking. Class size limited to 6 parent-child pairs.  $160 ($135 SBMA members)
Session I: June 18 - July 16
Session II: July 23 - August 20
