Discover sea creatures with super, extraordinary adaptations, far beyond those of mortal humans!
Every weekday (May 8-Dec 31) from 10:00am to 5:00pm
Location: Santa Barbara Ty Warner Sea Cent, 211 Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara Map

Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than an ocean wave! Able to disappear before your eyes! Look! In the tank! Is it an eel?! Is it a fish?! It's...Superpowers!

Yes, sea creatures with super, extraordinary adaptations, far beyond those of mortal humans! Yet despite their incredible powers and abilities, these amazing marine animals rely on the real super heroes - humans disguised as everyday people - to protect them from the most dangerous villains. Humans have the power to change the course of ghastly harmful habits, and to fight the never-ending battle for good ocean health, noble stewardship, and the sustainable way on land and sea! Will you be the next super hero?

This exhibit is sponsored in part by the California Coastal Commission.

Exhibition entrance included with Sea Center admission. Get a membership to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History and enjoy free admission to both the Museum and Sea Center, and free tickets to daytime Planetarium shows at the Museum.

Santa Barbara Muesum of Art
Date: Every day (Oct 28-Feb 2) from 11:00am to 5:00pm
Ages: All Admission Fees: $9 adults, $6 seniors, students with ID and children ages 6-17. Free on Sunday
Special Instructions: Closed Monday. Open Tuesday-Sunday `11 am. to 5: pm.

Internationally renowned pioneer of film and video art Diana Thater creates what she describes as "sculpture with images of nature in space." Phenomena of the natural world are recurring motifs for the artist, whose site-specific video and light installations explore the relationship between beauty and technology, and nature and the way it is mediated through human intervention. Two major works are the focus of this compelling exhibition, including Untitled Videowall (Butterflies) (2008), which stems from the Monarch Butterfly Project, the artist's response to a call by curators, collectors and environmentalists to draw attention to encroachments upon the species' winter home in Michoacán, Mexico. The Museum debut of this work coincides with the arrival of the Monarchs on the central coast during their annual migration.

Celebrating Rob Gibson
Date: 11/21/2009 at 3:00pm

There will be a memorial service to celebrate Rob this Saturday November 21st at 3pm at Campus Point. There will be an optional "paddle-out" for those that would like to honor him on the water as well. If you have a board, bring it - in addition UCSB will be providing as many boards possible.

Debbie Miles-Dutton of the UCSB Junior Lifeguards wrote, "He was the driving force behind so many programs that served and supported children in our community. Rob was a veteran State Beach Lifeguard, the Refugio Jr. Guard Coordinator, our own UCSB Jr. Guard Coordinator, a swimming and water polo instructor & coach for both UCSB students and local youth as well as the "Grand Master" of the GUSD 3rd Grade swim lesson program. The GUSD program was a priority for Rob as he knew how important learning to swim was to children of all socio-economic levels."

California Calling is a two-part exhibition highlighting works from a selection of artists and movements in California from the past sixty years. Drawn from the Museum's permanent collection and selected local collections, works included exemplify the distinctive vitality of art in the region and the significance of the SBMA as a venue for art on the West Coast.

Martial Arts Family Fitness
Students and staff will kick their way toward earning money for Academy of Healing Arts for teens.
Date: 11/21/2009 at 12:00pm

During the kick-a-thon students and staff of Martial Arts Family Fitness will have an opportunity to kick for three minutes and raise money for AHA! through either "per-kick" or "flat" pledges. "We have already received commitments from local business and individuals. We have also received pledges from people in Sacramento, Memphis, New York and Washington, DC," added Mr. Wheaton. "We feel strongly about what AHA! is doing and contributing to the overall wellbeing of our community, and encourage others in Santa Barbara to do what they can to support our community's youth."

"This year we partnered with AHA! because of the work they do with teens," added Lori Kibbie, MAFF's program director. "Last year our Kick-A-Thon benefited Domestic Violence Solutions, and the year before it was St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Our students and their families really want to help, and this is a great opportunity for them to practice some of the core principles we teach at Martial Arts Family Fitness."

Martial Arts Family Fitness is an award winning school that opened its doors in Santa Barbara in 2002. The Chief Instructor, Master Dave Wheaton has trained in martial arts for over 40 years, and is the founder of Hapkido International, an organization that teaches his unique martial arts curriculum of Dynamic Circle Hapkido to many schools across the United States. Martial Arts Family Fitness teaches martial arts and fitness classes to adults and children, specializing in children's life skills, youth leadership and family fitness. County of Santa Barbara Water Resources
Here's your opportunity to purchase a Systern Rain Barrel at a reduced price!
Date: 11/21/2009 from 10:00am to 2:00pm
Ages: Adult Admission Fees: N/A

Santa Barbara residents can capture and use rainwater with rain barrels being offered for purchase via Santa Barbara County's one-day-only sale on Saturday, November 21st. This second event was planned due to the overwhelming response to the first sale in September. By using rain barrels to capture rainwater for landscape irrigation, residents will not only decrease demand on the municipal water supply but also help prevent water pollution by reducing runoff.

The rain barrel sale will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Saturday November 21st at Santa Barbara City College Parking Lot #3, at the corner of Shoreline Drive and Loma Alta Drive in Santa Barbara.

The SYSTERN Rain Barrels, which retail for more than $120.00, will be available for only $50.00, including tax, while supplies last on a first-come, first-served basis. Payment must be by cash or check only.

For more information please visit www.sbwater.org/rainbarrel.
