Will you be the next super hero?

This exhibit is sponsored in part by the California Coastal Commission.

Claude Monet, Springtime, ca. 1872. Oil on canvas. The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, Maryland (37.11, acquired by Henry Walters
Date: Every day (Jan 30-May 30) from 11:00am to 5:00pm
Ages: all Admission Fees: $9 adults, $6 seniors, students with ID and children ages 6-17. Free on Sunday
Special Instructions: Closed on Monday

Assembled over a period of more than 140 years, the collection of the Walters Art Museum entails one of the finest holdings of 19th-century paintings in the United States. The only West Coast venue for the exhibition, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art is pleased to present 40 works from this renowned collection, selected for their art-historical significance and superior quality. Although strongly weighted in favor of French painting, this exhibition, like the collection, also includes major works by British, Spanish, and American artists.

Included are such masterpieces as Eugène Delacroix's powerful Christ on the Sea of Galilee (1854), Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' perfected, late version of Oedipus and the Sphinx (1864), Edgar Degas' splendid Before the Race (1882-1884), and such favorites as Edouard Manet's At the Café (ca. 1879) and Claude Monet's Springtime (ca. 1872). The paintings by Monet form the core of a strong group of Impressionist works, including beautiful landscapes by Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley.

Each painting is deeply satisfying on its own and displayed together, make for a ravishing exhibition that well captures the historical breadth and depth of the Walters' collection.

Santa Barbara Muesum of Art
Date: Every day (Oct 28-Feb 2) from 11:00am to 5:00pm
Ages: All Admission Fees: $9 adults, $6 seniors, students with ID and children ages 6-17. Free on Sunday
Special Instructions: Closed Monday. Open Tuesday-Sunday `11 am. to 5: pm.

Internationally renowned pioneer of film and video art Diana Thater creates what she describes as "sculpture with images of nature in space." Phenomena of the natural world are recurring motifs for the artist, whose site-specific video and light installations explore the relationship between beauty and technology, and nature and the way it is mediated through human intervention. Two major works are the focus of this compelling exhibition, including Untitled Videowall (Butterflies) (2008), which stems from the Monarch Butterfly Project, the artist's response to a call by curators, collectors and environmentalists to draw attention to encroachments upon the species' winter home in Michoacán, Mexico. The Museum debut of this work coincides with the arrival of the Monarchs on the central coast during their annual migration.

In the year 1609, two exciting events took place in the city of Venice: the publication of Monteverdi's Orfeo, and Galileo's first public demonstration of the telescope from the tallest tower of the city. The worlds of astronomy and music were intertwined throughout the baroque period. Tafelmusik commemorates the 400th anniversary of Galileo's achievement with this stellar concert - a soundscape of music and words from a time of discovery.

Time-travel with Tafelmusik to the baroque Italy of Monteverdi and Galileo; the England of Purcell and Isaac Newton; and the Germany of J.S. Bach and Maria Winkelmann Kirch. With works by Lully, Vincenzo Galilei (the father of Galileo), Rameau, Telemann and others; the program also features a narrator and visual projections.

Sings Like Hell
Another evening of rockin' music with Sings Like Hell!
Date: 02/20/2010 at 8:00pm
Admission Fees: General tickets-$43

When F. Scott Fitzgerald issued his classic conclusion that "There are no second acts in American lives," he failed to envision the career of legendary Texas troubadour Ray Wylie Hubbard. A willing conspirator in the late-seventies Cosmic Cowboy revolt that ushered in the mythical Outlaw era, Hubbard was a catalyst in the cultural upheaval that led to the peaceful coexistence of Lone Star music enthusiasts who comprised each end of the social and political spectrum of that troubled time. In the stellar company of iconic colleagues like Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Doug Sahm and Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Wylie Hubbard was an architect of the musical legacy that continues to inspire subsequent generations of up-and-coming Texas talent.

Formed in 1999 by Rob Waller and brothers Paul and Anthony Lacques during a philosophical discussion and rock-throwing session on an east Mojave desert trek, I See Hawks in L.A. wrote their first batch of songs, and then sought advice from local country rock guru David Jackson. Jackson set up a few mics and records Ro and Paul, adding his own melodic bass line. This demo turned into the featured songs on the Hawks' eponymous debut. The CD also established the Hawks' signature sound: high, lonesome three-part harmony, twangy guitar and unadorned acoustic arrangements, with lyrics musing on mortality, whales, and the geography of pre-apocalyptic L.A.
