Is your family ready for the new school year? Have you done your back to school shopping for clothes, supplies, backpacks and lunch boxes? Now is the time to start planning for the fall and registering for sports, after-school classes and child care. Consider spending your last couple weeks of summer easing back into a more structured schedule which may include earlier bedtimes and nightly reading. Take the time to help your child set up a special place in your home to do their homework. For those of you with children starting preschool or kindergarten, now is the time to get out the Kleenex and cameras. It is an exciting time for your child but can be much harder on the parents when they see their kids taking that first step towards independence.

- Download the SBParent.com PRINTABLE AFTER SCHOOL GUIDE that includes a comprehensive A-Z list of classes, sports, schools, and tutoring services complete with phone numbers.
- OR go online to our RESOURCE DIRECTORY to view businesses, their contact info & website.
- Use our PARENT PLANNER to plan for activities. Check the box next to each business you're interested in and then click parent planner and you can either print or email that list to yourself and/or others. (There is also a parent planner check box next to every calendar event.)
It is not too late to sign up for activities and sports. After-school programs are a great opportunity for kids to try something new. View the ads below & click to see websites. Share your child's favorite summer camp on our family favorites to win a prize! We hope those of you with children in school have had a smooth transition into the school routine.

We are excited to collaborate with our local newspapers to make it easier for parents to get information:
Pick up the 8/12/09 Back To School issue in the Santa Barbara News-Press for great articles.
- On Saturday, the Daily Sound will be printing their Back To School issue which will include the SBParent.com's guide with an A-Z Directory.
- Click on Noozhawk.com to learn about what is going on in our school districts and some of the upcoming challenges our schools face with all of the budget cuts.
MARK YOU CALENDAR for these UPCOMING EVENTS ...
CLICK TO SEE COMPLETE CALENDAR OF EVENTS
- This Saturday is a Parking Lot Sale to benefit Angels Bearing Gifts. At the corner of Santa Barbara & Ortega Streets from 8am-4pm... near the Farmers' Market.

- Find safety tips on bike riding or walking to school. >>
- Link to the schools and district sites to view school calendars, print lunch menus, print information packets and read the minutes from the school board meetings >>
- View a list of Bus Schedules and Public Transportation for the SB, Goleta and Montecito School Districts >>
- Share on PARENT CHAT... connect with other parents to start play groups, create carpools, get opinions on local resources, start a book club for kids or moms... single parents and grandparents can also connect here for extra support. >>
- Use the free CLASSIFIEDS and clean out those closets! Find toys, clothes, sporting equipment and lots more. >>
FYI... You may have known that we have sister sites, VenturaParent.com, but did you know about our newest sister, NorthSBCountyParent.com? If you live or work north or south along 101, or just looking for daytrips or more resources, we have you covered!

Stay Informed...
Resources... Below are just a few of the places you can find great resources for the school year...
- SBCEOPortal.org: The Portal is an educational online resource designed for students from K-12th that includes the World Book Encyclopedia, Digital English, Digital Math, Videos and more. Ask your school for a password.
- 211 Helpline: Offers County-wide multi-lingual information and referrals to health and human resources in SB County 24/7, and provides para-professional crisis intervention.
- Teen Centers: Twelve 35 & Isla Vista Teen Center offer teens a safe place to hang out with activities, tutoring services and a lot more.
- SB Public Library System: Parents can reserve books online. Check with your local library for tutoring services, computer & internet access, and do research for papers with their online services.
- SBParent.com: An online guide centralizing Santa Barbara family resources for tots to teens...Find an Event Calendar for everything going on in Santa Barbara for kids and parents. Use the Business Directory for a list of all family resources including after-school programs, scholarship programs, camps, kids classes, non-profits, local activities, libraries, parties, dental & health care, restaurants, shopping, tutors, parks, and more. Parents and teachers will find it useful for linking to school websites, finding field trip and fundraising ideas, tips on parent/teacher conferences and volunteer and internship opportunities for students and families.
Encourage your child to participate...
- There are amazing programs in schools throughout the county so make sure to ask your child's teacher about the available options if you are interested in having your child participate. These programs can differ from school to school and many happen at the county level.
- Click on SBParent.com to see a list of programs ranging from Battle of the Books to Math Superbowl, Reflections, Red Ribbon Week and more.
Get Involved...
- Support your child's teacher: Stay informed by reading the newsletters and teacher's notes that come home each week. Use your school's parent handbook to find your school's programs, schedules, after-school care options, etc.
- Volunteer: Ask your child's teacher how you can help with volunteering either in the class or on a school committee or by helping with a fundraiser.
- Donate: This year more than ever with all the budget cuts, parents are going to need to show their support by sharing their time and making financial contributions whether their child is in preschool or high school.
- Join the PTA: Support your PTA by becoming a paying member (approximately $9/year). The PTA is the largest all volunteer organization with the sole purpose of advocating for the education, safety and health of ALL children. Every dues paying member has a voice at the local, state and national level when it comes to legislation that pertains to children. Attend PTA meetings so you can stay informed on what is going on in your school. The PTA hosts fundraisers throughout the year to support special programs, and activities. See how you can support these through donations and volunteering. Ask your PTA about signing up at escrip.com and registering your Vons card, debit cards, and credit cards. Your Albertson's card can be registered and linked to the school through the Albertson's Community Partner program. (Any purchases you would normally make can pay your school back a percentage.)
Have a great year and remember to click on SBParent.com and nominate your favorite Teacher or Coach of the Year for 2010!
Don't Miss Out...
